Backpack Beach Chair

A backpack beach chair is a folding beach chair with shoulder straps, so it rides on your back and leaves both hands free for the cooler, the umbrella and the kid who suddenly needs a snack. The deciding spec is weight, because you carry it twice: out to the sand and back to the truck. After that, look at the straps, the frame and how much you plan to stuff in the pouch. (Renee says I'd strap a backpack to the cooler if it held still long enough.)

What’s in this listBeach chairs with backpack straps, lightest first. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

What makes a backpack beach chair different

Every beach chair folds. A backpack beach chair folds flat and then turns into luggage: two shoulder straps on the back of the frame, usually padded, often adjustable, sometimes removable. That's the whole sub-type. The chair part is the same family as every other low folding seat on the sand, and the beach chair page covers the shared basics, from seat styles to how they fold.

What changes here is the walk. A chair in your hand pulls on one arm and bangs your shin every third step. A chair on your back rides on both shoulders and stays out of the way. If the walk from the parking lot is long, sandy or involves a dune crossing with a cooler, the straps are the feature you're paying for.

Real talk: I didn't care about any of this until the year Renee stopped letting me make two trips. Now I read chair weights the way Jess reads arrow charts.

What the table on this page shows

The table lists beach chairs that come with backpack straps, lightest first. For each chair it shows the stated weight, the weight capacity, the seat height, the frame material and the number of recline positions where the listing gives them, plus whether there's a cup holder or a headrest. The table marks values read from the Amazon listing when the maker is silent. A dash means neither the maker nor the listing states the value, not that the feature is missing. Weight is always the maker's own figure.

The list changes as more makers' chairs come in, so the order and the spread of numbers will move. The columns stay the same, and they're the ones worth reading.

What to look at when you pick a backpack beach chair

Here's the order I'd check things in, starting with the one your shoulders will remember.

Chair weight is the number you carry twice

The Weight column is first for a reason. Whatever the chair weighs, you carry it out and you carry it back, and the back trip is the one after a day of sun, at low tide, with wet towels. The lightest chairs sit at the top of the table.

Weight comes from what the chair is made of and what's bolted to it. A bare frame with a sling seat is light. Add a padded headrest, a cup holder, a pouch, a towel bar and a canopy arm, and every piece adds a little. None of those extras are bad. Just know they ride on your back too.

Compare weights inside this table, not against a camping chair you own. Beach chairs sit low and fold flat, so they're built differently from the tall camp chairs with a carry bag.

Look for two straps that actually adjust

The straps are what make this chair a backpack, so look at them like you would on a day pack. The orthopaedic surgeons' backpack guidance asks for two wide, well-padded shoulder straps, both of them used, and tightened so the load sits close to your back. A chair that flops away from your back on every step pulls you backward and works your shoulders harder.

Adjustable straps matter more than they sound. You might carry the chair over a T-shirt in July and over a fleece in September. One maker's manual describes two straps with adjusters to shorten or lengthen them. Padding is listed by some makers, too; one maker's product page calls out padded backpack straps along with a rear pouch.

Removable straps are a nice extra if you'll use the same chair around a fire ring. The same manual says its straps unhook from their mounts. Sewn-on straps can't snag on anything if they're gone, but they also can't go anywhere.

Frame material decides how the weight is spent

The Frame column says what the maker lists: aluminum, steel, or a mix of the two. One maker's spec sheet, for example, describes its beach chair frame as aluminum and steel together. The frame is usually most of the chair's weight, so the material and the Weight column tend to tell the same story.

Whatever the frame, salt and sand are the enemies of every hinge on it. One maker's care instructions say to hose the chair down with fresh water to get salt and sand off, then let it air dry before you store it. That's a two-minute job at the outdoor shower, and it's the cheapest way to keep a folding joint folding.

Weight capacity is a ceiling, read it as one

The Weight capacity column shows the rating the listing gives. It's the most the chair is rated to hold, not a target to land near. If you're near the top of a rating, move to a chair with more room. Ratings across beach chairs vary a lot, so this column is worth a look even if you've never thought about it.

There's no spare-pocket math here. Whatever's in the pouch isn't sitting on the seat, but you are, plus the towel you rolled up behind your back.

Seat height on a backpack chair usually runs low

Backpack beach chairs are mostly low chairs, built to sit close to the sand with your legs out in front. The Seat height column shows how far the seat sits off the ground where it's listed. Low seats are steadier and keep your feet in the wet sand at the waterline. They're also harder to stand up from after a long afternoon.

If getting up out of a low seat is the problem, the high beach chair page covers the taller seats, and the low beach chair page goes deeper on the short ones.

The pouch is storage, so pack it like a backpack

Most backpack chairs carry a pouch on the back of the seat. One maker's page describes a large rear drawstring pouch for towels, sunscreen and sunglasses. Some chairs go further with an insulated cooler pouch; the maker's page says so when it's there.

The orthopaedic guidance on loading a backpack applies here: heavier items low and near the center. On a chair, that means the drinks go in the bottom of the pouch, and the sunglasses ride on top. The guidance also says to pack light and take things out if the load is too heavy.

My one opinion on this page: keep the pouch light, because the chair is already the load. The reason is in that same guidance. Back, neck or shoulder pain after carrying is one of its signs of too much weight, and a chair plus a full cooler pouch is a lot more weight than the chair alone. Let the ice ride in the cooler, where it belongs. (The ice math is my department. I take it personally.)

Recline positions and lay-flat are a bonus, not the point

Some backpack chairs recline through several positions, and a few go all the way flat. The Positions column gives the count; lay-flat is something to confirm on the maker's page. Reclining hardware adds a bit of weight and a few more joints to rinse. If lying back is the main reason you go to the beach, the reclining beach chair page and the lay-flat beach chair page dig into the mechanisms.

Folded thickness decides the trunk

Folded size isn't a table column, but it's worth checking on the maker's page. A backpack chair is meant to fold flat, and the flatter it folds, the closer it rides to your back and the easier it stacks in the trunk with three others. One maker's spec sheet lists its backpack chair at 7 inches across the thin side when folded. Thinner folds carry better.

Kinds of backpack beach chairs and when to choose which

Not every strapped chair is the same chair with straps glued on. Here's how they split:

Pick the basic chair if the walk is long and you mostly sit up. Pick a recliner if you stay all day and nap. Pick a cooler-pouch chair only if the drinks are few and the walk is short. If you want shade and a seat in one, the canopy version saves you an umbrella, but it doesn't replace a real one on a windy day; the beach umbrella page covers those.

How to fold it and wear it on the walk

Folding is where most of the cursing happens, so here's the order one maker's manual gives, which matches how most of these chairs close:

  1. Bring the backrest upright and stand up.
  2. Fold in any support bar, take off the cup holder, fold the headrest down.
  3. Turn the chair upside down and close the front and back legs together.
  4. Buckle the closing strap so the chair can't open on your back.

Then put it on like a pack. Bend your knees to lift it, both straps on, and snug them so the chair sits close to your back, per the orthopaedic guidance. If the chair has a waist or chest strap, use it. Carry the cooler in your hands, not hooked over the chair. A chair that swings is a chair that hits the backs of your knees on the dune stairs. Ask me how I know.

Setup and care after a day on the sand

Set the chair up on flat, firm sand. One maker's manual says to use flat, stable ground to keep the chair from tipping, and to make sure the frame and headrest are fully open and the recline locked before you sit.

After the beach:

That's the whole routine. Skip it and the chair still works next July. It just squeaks at you the whole time, like Walt's truck door.

Beach chair safety

Keep fingers clear of the hinges when you open, fold or recline the chair; one maker's manual warns about the folding joints and the mechanism under the armrest. Watch kids around a chair being folded.

Sun is the other safety item on any beach day. The CDC says to sit in shade under an umbrella or other shelter, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, and reapply after 2 hours in the sun or after swimming, sweating or toweling off. UV reflects off sand and water, so shade alone doesn't cover you.

Who should skip a backpack beach chair

If you park ten steps from the sand, or you already haul everything in a beach cart, the straps don't buy you much. A regular folding chair from the main beach chair page will do the same job, and you'll have one less strap to tuck in. Same if you want a tall chair to sit at table height; most backpack chairs are built low.

And if you go to the beach once a summer and sit in a rented chair, keep your money for the beach umbrella instead. Rentals don't come with straps, but they don't need carrying either.

For everybody else, with a long walk and two hands already full, the backpack chair is the one that earns its spot in the trunk. Check the weight column, snug the straps, and keep the pouch light. The cooler is heavy enough for both of us.

Questions people ask

How should a backpack beach chair sit on my back?

Wear it like any backpack. The orthopaedic surgeons' backpack guidance says to use both shoulder straps and tighten them so the load sits close to your back. Bend at the knees to pick the folded chair up. If your back, neck or shoulders hurt during or after the walk, the guidance says that can mean a poor fit or too much weight.

Can I take the straps off a backpack beach chair?

On some models, yes. One beach chair maker's manual says its two adjustable straps unhook from their mounts, and the adjusters shorten or lengthen them. Not every chair works that way; some straps are sewn on. If you want to use the chair as a plain beach chair at the cabin too, check whether the maker calls the straps removable.

How do I clean salt and sand off a backpack beach chair?

One maker's manual says to wipe the frame and fabric with a damp cloth and mild soap, or hose the chair down with fresh water to get salt and sand off. Let it air dry before you fold it away, and store it somewhere dry. The same manual says not to machine wash or bleach the backpack straps.

Is a backpack beach chair heavier than a regular beach chair?

Often a little, because straps, pads and pouches add material. The Weight column on this page shows each chair's stated weight, lightest first, so you can compare straight across. A strapped chair still carries easier than a lighter one in your hand, since the load sits on both shoulders instead of one arm.
