Reclining Beach Chair

A reclining beach chair is a sitting chair with a backrest that locks at two or more angles, so you can sit up for lunch and lean back for the afternoon without moving to a different chair. Pick it by the positions you'll really use, then by how the back locks, then by seat height and carry weight. Real talk: most people use two positions and ignore the rest. (Renee uses one. She found it in 2015 and nobody is allowed to touch it.)

What’s in this listBeach chairs with two or more recline positions, as stated by the maker or the Amazon listing. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

What makes a reclining beach chair different

A fixed-back beach chair has one angle, and you live with it. A reclining beach chair gives you a choice. The backrest swings on a pivot and locks into a set of positions, from sitting up straight to leaning way back. You change the chair instead of changing chairs.

That's the whole sub-type, and it matters more than it sounds. The beach day isn't one activity. There's the hour you watch the kids in the surf, the hour you eat, the hour you read, and the hour you pretend to read. A good reclining chair has a position for each, and it holds each one without creeping.

What it isn't: a lounger. The beach lounge chair page covers chairs built mainly for lying back or going flat. A reclining beach chair is a sitting chair first. The recline is there for the middle of the afternoon, not for the whole day. The shared basics of every beach chair, from frame styles to folding, are on the main beach chair page.

What the table on this page shows

The table lists beach chairs whose maker or listing states two or more recline positions. A chair with a fixed back doesn't make the list, however comfortable it looks.

For each chair you'll see the Positions count, then the carry weight, the weight capacity, the seat height and the frame material. Yes-or-no columns mark a cup holder, a headrest or pillow, and backpack straps. Blank cells show as a dash: neither the maker nor the listing states that value, which isn't the same as the chair lacking it.

What to look at when you pick a reclining beach chair

I'd go down the columns like this, starting with the one that makes this chair what it is.

Recline positions: count the ones you'll actually use

The Positions column is the maker's count of locked back angles. Makers sell chairs with three, four and five positions. The count tells you how fine the steps are between the first angle and the last one.

Here's how I'd think about it. Write down what you do at the beach, in order. Eat, watch the water, read, doze. Each of those wants an angle. If your list has two items, a three-position chair covers it with one to spare. If your list has a nap and a paperback and a sunset, more positions let you land closer to the angle you want.

It's like the gears on a bike. Ten sounds better than three, and most of us ride around in two of them. (Exhibit A: Renee. One position, every summer, no exceptions.)

Two more things to check beyond the count:

The first one matters if you eat in the chair or sit up to keep an eye on kids. The second one matters if you want a lounger and don't know it yet.

How the back locks decides how the chair feels

Every reclining chair needs a way to hold the backrest at an angle under your weight. On many beach chairs the armrests are the controls. One maker's manual describes it plainly: lift the armrests to free the back, move it, and push the armrests down to lock it into position.

What you want from a lock:

Walt's take, from the camp table: "A chair that moves is a chair that can move when you don't want it to." A lock that's half-seated is the one that lets go when you shift your weight to reach the cooler.

Change the angle with your weight off the backrest

My one opinion on this page: never change the recline while you're leaning on the backrest. Sit up first, every time.

The reason is in the maker's own instructions. One manual's first step for adjusting the recline is to sit up so there's no weight on the backrest, then lift the armrests. The same manual says to make sure the recline position is set and locked before you sit, and to keep your hands clear of the reclining mechanism under the armrest. A backrest moved under load moves faster than you expect, and the hinge is right where your fingers are.

So the routine is short. Sit up. Lift. Move the back. Press down. Lean back. It takes three seconds and saves your knuckles.

Seat height and recline work together

The Seat height column shows how far the seat sits off the sand, in inches, where the maker or the listing lists it. Most reclining beach chairs keep the seat low. One maker, for example, describes its four-position chair as having a low-profile seat.

Low seat plus a deep recline is comfortable for a long afternoon. It's also the hardest combination to get out of, because you start the climb from a lean. If your knees or hips are part of the decision, check seat height before you check positions. Taller seats are on the high beach chair page, and the short ones get their own look on the low beach chair page.

Weight capacity is the most the chair is rated for

The Weight capacity column shows the maker's rated maximum, in pounds. Treat it as the ceiling. Your weight, plus the bag on your lap, plus the kid who climbs on for a minute, all count toward it.

Ratings aren't the same across makers. Two makers' pages I read listed different maximums for their reclining beach chairs, so don't assume one number fits the whole group. Read the column. If you're near the top of a rating, pick a chair with more room under it, since leaning back moves your weight onto the backrest and its hinge.

Carry weight and straps decide the walk

Carry weight is what the folded chair weighs, as the maker lists it. A reclining chair has more moving parts than a fixed-back chair: the pivot, the lock and often a support bar. That hardware is part of what you carry.

Some makers fold the frame differently to make up for it. One describes a three-position chair with a bi-fold design that folds to a quarter of its open size. Others add padded backpack straps; one maker lists them on its four-position chair. The table marks straps where the listing does. If the walk is long, the backpack beach chair page covers how to wear one.

Frame material is about salt as much as weight

The Frame column lists what the maker or the listing says the frame is made of. Makers describe aluminum frames, steel frames and mixed aluminum-and-steel frames; both four- and three-position chairs from one maker use the mix.

On a reclining chair, the frame isn't just tubes. It's pivots and lock brackets, and that's where salt and sand collect. One maker's warranty excludes corrosion and rust from lack of maintenance, and also damage from damp storage. That tells you where the care time should go.

Headrest and cup holder: check them reclined

The table marks a headrest or pillow and a cup holder as yes or no. On a reclining chair, check both at the angle you'll use most. One maker pairs a head pillow with its four-position backrest, which makes sense: lean back and your head needs somewhere to go.

Cup holders are trickier. On some chairs they mount to the armrest, and the armrest is also the recline control. One maker's manual has the cup holder push onto a mount until it clicks and swivel freely. Swivel is the feature you want here, so it stays level when the arm moves. Otherwise, lifting the armrest to change positions tips your drink into the sand. Ask me how I know.

Kinds of reclining beach chairs and when to choose which

Reclining chairs split by how far back they go and how they fold:

Choose a two- or three-position chair if you mostly sit up and want light and simple. Choose four or five positions if you stay all day and change what you're doing. Choose one that lies flat only if you'll actually lie flat; those are on the lay-flat beach chair page. For the backyard, where weight doesn't matter, the zero gravity chair reclines with your feet up.

Setting up a reclining chair on the sand

Pick flat, firm sand. One maker's manual says to use the chair only on stable, flat ground to prevent tipping. Soft sand under one back leg turns a gentle lean into a slow slide.

Then open it in this order:

  1. Open the frame fully until it stops.
  2. Raise the headrest until it clicks, if there is one.
  3. Choose your position with nobody in the chair.
  4. Press the armrests down until the back locks on both sides.
  5. Sit, then lean back.

The manual is direct on the last part: make sure the chair and headrest are fully open and the recline is set and locked before you sit. Keep fingers away from the folding joints while you open, close or recline, and watch kids around a chair that's being adjusted. The same manual says to supervise children.

Sun on a reclined chair

Leaning back points your face, chest and shins at the sky. That changes where the sun lands, and it changes it slowly enough that you don't notice until dinner.

The CDC's sun-safety page covers what to bring:

The CDC also notes UV reflects off sand and water, so the umbrella doesn't cover everything. The beach umbrella page covers those. And yes, I move my chair to follow the shade every hour like it's Groundhog Day.

Care that keeps the recline working

The recline is the part that wears. Look after it and the rest of the chair mostly looks after itself.

That last one is mine, not the manual's. A lock that grinds in June won't get better in August. If a position won't hold under your weight after a rinse, stop sitting in it and contact the maker.

Who should skip a reclining beach chair

Skip it if you sit up the whole time. A fixed-back chair from the beach chair page has fewer parts to rinse and less hardware to carry. Skip it too if you really want to lie flat for hours; a lounger built for that will do it better.

And if getting up from a low seat is hard, don't let the recline count sell you. Seat height comes first. The beach chairs for elderly users list looks at that directly.

For everybody else, the reclining chair is the one that keeps up with the day. Sit up for the sandwich, lean back for the book, sit up again when somebody yells from the water. Just lock it each time. The chair can't tell you it's only half-seated. The armrest can.

Questions people ask

What is a reclining beach chair?

It's a folding beach chair whose backrest locks at more than one angle. You sit up straight in the first position and lean back further in each one after that. Some stop at a comfortable lean, and some go all the way flat. This page lists chairs whose maker or listing states two or more recline positions, so a fixed-back chair isn't on it.

How many recline positions should a beach chair have?

Enough to cover how you spend the day. Most people want a true upright for eating and watching the water, plus one lean for reading or a nap. Makers sell three-, four- and five-position chairs; more positions mean smaller steps between angles. If you never lie flat, a chair with fewer positions and a simpler frame does the job.

How do you adjust a reclining beach chair?

Follow the chair's own manual, since locks differ. One maker's steps: sit up so there's no weight on the backrest, lift the armrests, move the back to the angle you want, then push the armrests down to lock it. Keep your hands clear of the mechanism under the armrests, and check the lock on both sides before you lean back.

Do all reclining beach chairs lie flat?

No. A reclining chair may stop short of flat, and makers say so in different ways. One maker describes its three-position chair as letting you sit up, lean back or stretch out, without calling it flat. If lying flat matters, look for the maker's own lay-flat wording and a backrest support bar, and see the lay-flat page.

Why won't my beach chair stay in a reclined position?

Usually the lock isn't fully seated. Take your weight off the backrest, pick the position again and press the armrests down until they lock, as one maker's manual describes. Sand and salt in the joints don't help, so rinse the chair with fresh water. If it still slips under your weight, stop using it and contact the maker.
