Best Beach Chair Picks

The best beach chair is the one that holds you comfortably and still feels light at 5 p.m. on the walk back to the car. This list only takes beach chairs whose maker or Amazon listing states two numbers: how much the chair weighs and how much weight it holds. The chair weights are the makers' own figures. Real talk: Renee picks the color, I pick the numbers, and the walk back decides who was right.

Picks on this list, by what the data says

Every label below comes from a number or a word in the maker's or the listing's specs. A label tells you what a chair is, not that it's the winner. The list is re-checked every week, so labels can move from chair to chair.

Helinox Beach Chair (re): the lightest and the highest capacity

At 3.75 lb by the maker's figure, the Helinox is the lightest chair on this list by a wide margin, less than half the weight of either GCI. It also has the highest stated capacity here, 320 lb, from the maker. The listing gives an aluminum frame. That's where the stated specs stop: no cup holders, recline positions or straps are listed in the data, so don't count on any until you check. It's the one chair here in the higher of the two price tiers on this page.

GCI Outdoor Backpack Beach Chair: the most stated features

The Backpack Beach Chair has the longest spec list on this page. From the maker: 8.6 lb, 250 lb capacity and an aluminum frame. From the listing: backpack straps, 4 recline positions, cup holders and a headrest pillow. It's the only chair here with straps or recline positions stated. If you walk to the beach with a cooler in one hand and an umbrella in the other, the straps are the spec that matters.

GCI Outdoor Waterside Beach Rocker: the only rocker and the heaviest

The name says it: this is a rocking beach chair, the only one on this list. It weighs 10 lb by the maker's figure, the heaviest chair here. The listing gives a 250 lb capacity and cup holders. The data doesn't list a frame material, straps or recline positions. Walt saw the listing photo and said, "A rocking chair on sand. Now I've seen everything." He's 63. He has not seen everything.

How to choose the best beach chair for your beach

The rule behind this list uses two numbers: chair weight and weight capacity. Those decide most beach chair choices, so they come first. After them come frame, carry, recline, seat style and the small stuff.

Chair weight is the number you feel twice

A beach chair gets carried in and carried out, and the walk out happens after a day of sun when the chair has picked up sand, a wet towel and somebody's flip-flops. On this list, chair weights run from 3.75 to 10 lb, and every weight is the maker's own figure, because that's the chair alone. You don't carry the box.

Rule of thumb from the ice math: every pound of chair is a pound you could have spent on ice. On a long walk from a town lot, a 6-lb difference is the difference between one trip and two. On a short walk from the boardwalk steps, you can afford the heavier chair for the features.

Weight capacity is a limit, so leave room under it

Weight capacity is how much the chair is rated to hold. Here, it runs from 250 to 320 lb. Leave room under it. You don't sit down gently on sand; you drop. Kids climb on the arms. Somebody sets the cooler on the seat while they dig for the sunscreen. Goveer's chair instructions are a good general checklist for any beach chair:

Sand isn't flat, so wiggle the legs in until the chair stops rocking. (On a rocker, until it stops rocking the wrong way.)

Frame material: light, and rinse it anyway

Two chairs here list an aluminum frame, one from the maker and one from the listing. The rocker's data doesn't state one. Aluminum is what keeps beach chairs light. It's not a reason to skip the hose. Helinox's care notes say to rinse the frame with fresh water, especially after salt water, to protect the finish. That advice holds for every frame on the sand.

Carry: straps beat handles on a long walk

Only one chair here lists backpack straps. If your beach has a long walk, that's worth more than any cup holder. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' backpack advice applies to beach chairs on your back as much as school bags:

Put the heavy stuff low and in the middle, if the chair has a pouch. Don't load the chair until it weighs more than the cooler. Renee says the chair pouch is where sandwiches go to get flat.

Recline positions: how many you'll actually use

One chair on this list states recline positions: 4. Most people find one for reading and one for napping, and the rest are for the guy who likes adjusting. If you nap at the beach, look for a recline you can lock. If you sit up to watch kids in the water, recline doesn't matter much.

Rocker, low seat or classic: pick by how you sit

A rocker moves, which some people love and some people can't stand. A low seat puts your feet in the sand and your back close to the ground. A taller chair is easier to get out of. The rocker on this list is the only one that moves on purpose. If getting up from a low chair takes a two-step plan, measure the seat height on the maker's page before you buy.

Cup holders and pillows are nice, not deciding

Two chairs here list cup holders, and one lists a headrest pillow. These are the details you notice at 2 p.m., not the ones that decide the purchase. A cup holder on sand is still a cup holder on a chair that sinks a little on one side, so I keep the cooler close, and the important drink in my hand.

Open and fold it at home first

Every chair folds a little differently, and the beach is a bad place to learn. Goveer's instructions for its own chair show how many steps a folding chair can hide: unclip a buckle, push the seat and back apart until the frame opens fully, click the headrest up, then reverse it all to close and strap it shut. Do it twice in the driveway. Keep your fingers clear of the joints while you do, because that's where folding chairs pinch.

Rinse your beach chair in fresh water every trip

Rinse your beach chair with fresh water every trip, even the short ones. That's my one opinion on this page. Helinox's care notes say to rinse the frame after salt water, brush or rinse off loose sand and let everything dry fully before packing. Goveer's instructions say to rinse off salt and sand, air dry the chair and store it dry, away from long sun and moisture. Salt doesn't take the week off just because you did.

Sun, wind and the end of the day

Shade still needs sunscreen

A chair doesn't block the sun; it just holds you in it. The CDC says UV rays are strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daylight time in the continental U.S., and they reflect off sand and water. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher even in the shade, and reapply after 2 hours or after swimming, sweating or toweling off. The CDC also says sunscreen isn't recommended for babies 6 months and younger; keep them out of the midday sun and use protective clothing instead.

Fold it before you leave it

A light chair moves in wind. The 3.75-lb chair on this list is the lightest, which is great on the walk and less great in a gust. If you go swimming, fold it down or set the cooler next to it. Never leave a chair standing open with nobody nearby on a windy afternoon.

Carry it home, every time

Mote Marine Laboratory reports nesting sea turtles getting tangled in beach chairs left out overnight, and one dragged a chair into the ocean. Some Florida beaches require furniture to be removed or stacked at the dune line after dark during nesting season, May 1 to October 31. Check your town's beach page. Then take the chair home. Every chair on this list folds, so there's no excuse, and Renee will remind me if I forget.

Who should skip this list

If you need shade built into the chair, skip this list and look at the beach chair with canopy page. If you want to lie flat for an afternoon nap, a reclining beach chair or lounge page fits better. If what you really need is a chair for the deer camp fire ring, the camping chair page has taller chairs that don't care about sand. And if your beach day is a half-hour on the boardwalk with an ice cream, you don't need a chair at all. Renee would like that last sentence on the record.

How this list is built

The rule is in the box above, and here it is in full. A chair gets on this list when it's a beach chair and its maker or its Amazon listing states two things: the chair's own weight and its weight capacity. Chair weights always come from the maker's own page, because a store's weight field isn't reliable enough to plan a walk around. Other values come from the maker first; where the maker is silent, they come from the Amazon listing.

The order follows that rule and the numbers in the data, never a preference for any brand. There are no ratings or review counts behind these picks, and nobody at Hemlock Run has sat in any of these chairs. The labels describe what each chair is, not which one is better. The list is re-checked every week, so a chair can drop off when its data changes and a new one can come on when its numbers fill in. If a spec is missing, it isn't mentioned, and in the table it shows as a dash. Right now that's a short list, three chairs, because few listings state both numbers.

Pick the chair you'll still want to carry at 5 p.m. The ice math depends on it.

Questions people ask

What is the lightest beach chair on this list?

The Helinox Beach Chair (re), at 3.75 lb by the maker's figure. The GCI Outdoor Backpack Beach Chair weighs 8.6 lb and the GCI Outdoor Waterside Beach Rocker weighs 10 lb. The Helinox also has the highest stated weight capacity here, 320 lb. The list is re-checked weekly, so the lightest chair can change.

How much weight should a beach chair hold?

More than you plus whatever you'll lean, set or drop on it. On this list, stated capacities run from 250 to 320 lb. Treat the number as a limit and leave room under it. Goveer's beach chair instructions add two rules that apply to any chair: use it on stable, flat ground, and make sure the frame is fully open and locked before you sit.

Are aluminum beach chairs good for salt water?

Aluminum is a common beach frame because it's light, and two chairs here list it. Salt still wears on any finish. Helinox's care notes say to rinse the frame with fresh water, especially after salt water, brush off loose sand and let everything dry fully before you pack it. Goveer's instructions say the same about salt and sand.

Can I leave my beach chair on the beach overnight?

Better not. Mote Marine Laboratory reports nesting sea turtles getting tangled in beach chairs left out at night, and some Florida beaches require furniture to be removed or stacked at the dune line after dark during nesting season, May 1 to October 31. Check your town's beach rules and carry the chair home.
