Beach Shade

Beach shade is anything you bring that puts a roof between you and the sun on the sand: a beach tent with walls, an open canopy, a cabana, or a wind-powered shade. Choose by three things, in order: how many people sit under it at noon, how windy your beach gets, and what your town allows. Then read the shade area and the UPF. (Renee says I plan beach shade like a stand site. She means it as a compliment about one time in four.)

What’s in this listEvery beach tent, canopy and cabana we track on Amazon US, largest stated shade first. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

Four kinds of beach shade and what each one is for

Beach shade comes in four shapes, and the shape matters more than the logo. Here's the one-line version of each, with the page that goes deeper.

An umbrella is shade too, and for one or two people it's often the simplest answer. It has its own beach umbrella page.

The table under this page lists every beach tent, canopy and cabana we track, largest stated shade area first. It shows type, shade area, size, how many people the maker says it fits, UPF, anchoring, the maker's wind feature, pole material and weight. Values come from the maker, or from the Amazon listing where the maker is silent (marked as listing values); where neither states a value, you get a dash. Weight is always the maker's own figure.

How to choose beach shade in three questions

How many people sit under it at noon

Shade area in square feet is the column the table is sorted by, and it's the first number I read. Noon is the test because that's the hour you most need it. The EPA's shadow rule says that when your shadow is shorter than you are, around midday, UV is at its highest, and it advises shade from late morning through mid-afternoon.

So count people at noon, sitting the way they actually sit. Then do it in the driveway: set out the chairs, towels and cooler, measure the rectangle, multiply length by width, and compare it to the table. Ask me how I know the photo on the box shows four very thin people who own no coolers.

The Fits column is the maker's own people count. It's handy for comparing two products, less handy for planning your own crowd. Trust your tape measure over the box.

How windy your beach gets

Wind decides which shape survives the afternoon. My one opinion on this page: pick the kind of shade by your beach's wind, not by the picture. The reason is in the makers' own instructions, which disagree about wind because the designs work differently:

If your beach is dead calm until noon, the wind design will sulk all morning. If it blows hard every afternoon, a tall frame will spend its day trying to leave. Know your beach before you buy for it. (I check the marine forecast before I check the ice. Renee checks whether I packed the sunscreen. One of us has priorities.)

What your town allows

Shade rules vary by town, and they've been changing fast.

Read the town's beach page before you pick the shape. Buying a tent for an umbrella-only town is the kind of mistake you only make once, in front of your in-laws.

What to look at in the beach shade table

Shade area and size are different columns

Shade area is the covered area, in square feet, the maker or the listing states. Size is the stated dimensions, in feet. For a tent the two run close together. For a stretch canopy, the fabric spreads past the shadow because the corners slope down to the bags, so the size reads bigger than the shade. Some listings also give a packed size where an open size belongs, which is why I read both.

UPF is the fabric's rating, not a promise about your skin

UPF is the UV protection factor of the fabric, when the maker states one. The Skin Cancer Foundation explains it on clothing: UPF 50 lets through about 1/50th of UV, about 2%; 30 to 49 is very good and 50+ excellent. It also says dense weaves and darker or brighter colors block more, while wet and stretched fabric block less.

That's the fabric overhead. The bigger leak comes from below. A University of Utah dermatology table lists dry dune sand reflecting 17% of 300 nm UV, against 2.5% for grass and 85% for fresh snow. Dana-Farber's dermatologists say UV bounces off sand and water at low angles into the shade, and cite a study that measured up to 84 percent of full-sun UV under an umbrella.

Jess's take, delivered over a kitchen table: "Quick math. The roof handles the sky. The sand is a second, dimmer sky aimed at your shins." She then drew it on a napkin. I still have the napkin.

So shade is a layer. In a randomized trial in JAMA Dermatology, 78% of people who sat under a beach umbrella for 3.5 midday hours got at least some sunburn, against 25% using SPF 100 sunscreen alone. The authors concluded an umbrella alone may not be enough for long exposure. Hats, shirts and sunscreen still go in the bag.

Anchoring is what the maker puts in the box

The Anchoring column lists the included anchors: sand pockets, sandbags, stakes, sand screws, guy lines. On sand, weight wins. One canopy maker says ordinary stakes barely grip loose, dry sand. A product that ships with only stakes needs a plan for sand weight before it goes anywhere near the dunes.

Wind handling is the maker's words

The Wind handling column records the feature the maker or listing names, like a wind vent or a design that "works with wind." We copy the claim and don't grade it. A vent on a tent and a wind-powered arch are very different answers to the same question, which is why the Type column sits right next to it.

Poles tell you what bends and what holds

The Poles column shows the frame material the maker or the listing lists: aluminum, fiberglass, steel, or none. It reads differently for each type. On a pop-up tent the frame is a flexible coil that folds by twisting. On a stretch canopy the poles only push the fabric up while the bags do the holding, so where you plant them matters more than the metal. On a frame canopy the legs carry the whole roof and the weights hang from them. On a wind-powered shade there's one arch and the breeze does the rest. A dash in this column means neither the maker nor the listing says, not that the shade floats on good intentions.

Weight is the walk, both directions

Weight is the stated weight in pounds. A wind-powered shade sits at the light end; one maker lists its larger model at just over four pounds. A pop-up frame with its own weights is the heavy end. Read weight against your walk from the parking lot, and remember that shade comes home with sand in every seam. (Renee says beach gear gains weight in the afternoon, like the rest of us.)

Beach shade tent or open shade: matching shade to the day

Skip buying any big shade if you go to the beach twice a summer for an hour after 4 p.m. The EPA's shadow rule says your exposure is lower when your shadow is long. A hat and a shirt cover that trip.

Setting beach shade so it works past lunch

Shade that's perfect at 11 is in the wrong place by 3. A few habits keep it useful:

  1. Find the wind first. A tent's back wall faces it; a stretch canopy's poles go on the windward side, angled slightly into it, per one stretch-canopy maker.
  2. Set up for the afternoon, not the moment. The shadow swings away from the morning side as the day goes on, so leave room on the far side to slide chairs over.
  3. Weight everything before anyone sits under it.
  4. Re-check the anchors after lunch. Sand drifts, bags settle, guy lines loosen.

None of that is complicated. It's just easier to do at 10 a.m. than to fix at 2 p.m. with a sandwich in one hand.

Beach shade care and the end of the day

Every maker's care advice I read comes down to two things: get the sand out and get it dry before it goes in the bag. One stretch-canopy maker also says not to leave its canopy up more than 24 hours, to protect the fabric.

Take all of it off the sand at night. Mote Marine Laboratory found nesting sea turtles running into furniture left on the beach overnight, and asks people to fill their holes so hatchlings don't get trapped. Sandbag holes count.

Safety

No beach shade is a lightning shelter. The National Weather Service says a tent offers no protection from lightning and the safe places are a building or a vehicle. When thunder starts, go, and wait 30 minutes after the last rumble before coming back.

Count the people at noon, know your wind, read the town's rules, and then let the table tell you which shade is biggest.

Questions people ask

What is the best kind of beach sun shade for a windy beach?

One that works with the wind or sits low. A wind-powered shade needs a breeze; one maker says 2 to 3 mph is enough. Stretch canopies flex if the sandbags are heavy. Tall pop-up frames need heavy weight per leg, and one canopy maker says to take them down above 25 mph. Whatever you pick, sand weight beats stakes.

Does a beach shade tent block all UV?

No. Dana-Farber notes that UV reflects off sand and water at low angles and reaches people under shade, citing a study that measured up to 84 percent of full-sun UV under an umbrella. A dermatology table lists dry dune sand reflecting 17% of 300 nm UV. Shade plus sunscreen and clothing is the advice.

How much beach shade do I need for a family?

Measure it at home. Set out your chairs, towels and cooler the way you sit at the beach, measure the rectangle in feet, and compare it to the shade area in square feet in the table. Shade moves through the day, so add room to slide everything over in the afternoon.

What does UPF 50 mean on beach shade?

UPF is a fabric's UV protection factor. The Skin Cancer Foundation says UPF 50 lets through about 1/50th of UV rays, roughly 2%, and rates 30 to 49 as very good and 50+ as excellent. Wet or stretched fabric lets more through.

Can I use a camping canopy as beach shade?

Yes, if you weight it for sand. One canopy maker's beach guide says regular tent stakes don't hold in loose sand, recommends sand screws at least 12 inches long and roughly 25 to 40 pounds per leg on a 10 by 10 frame, and says to face the shorter side into the wind. Check the town's canopy size limit first.
