Compressor Fridge
A compressor fridge is a portable 12V refrigerator that cools the way your kitchen fridge does, with refrigerant and a small compressor, so it holds a set temperature instead of a set distance below the weather. Most go cold enough to freeze. It's the electric cooler for long trips, hot days and venison. The choices are size, one zone or two, and how you'll power it. Jess calls it "a kitchen fridge that learned to commute." I call it the most dependable member of camp.

What’s in this listCompressor-cooled fridges, coldest stated minimum temperature first. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.
How a compressor fridge earns its keep
Most plug-in coolers look alike from the outside. A compressor fridge is the one that actually works like a refrigerator. One maker's manual describes it as a low-maintenance refrigerant circuit with a compressor. Its buying guide says it "works like your refrigerator" to deliver low temperatures and precise control.
That changes three things. It holds the temperature you set, within the heat it's rated for, not a number of degrees below the outside air. It can freeze. And it cycles: the compressor runs until the box reaches the set point, rests, then starts again when the inside warms up a bit. That rest time is why a compressor fridge can live on a battery.
If you want the group-wide primer first, the electric cooler page has it. This page sticks to compressor models.
The table on this page lists compressor-cooled fridges, coldest stated minimum temperature first. It shows the lowest temperature, capacity, zones, DC input, whether wall power is included, battery protection and exterior size as the maker or the Amazon listing states them; listing values are marked. A dash means neither lists it.
Reading a compressor fridge spec sheet
Real talk: you're picking a fridge you'll wire into a vehicle. Read it like an electrician and a cook at the same time.
The lowest temperature decides fridge or fridge-freezer
The table sorts by the lowest temperature the maker or the listing states. One maker's 25-liter model lists a range from 68°F down to -7.6°F. Others list -4°F.
What you need depends on what goes in. FDA guidance is 40°F or below for a fridge and 0°F for a freezer. For venison, Penn State Extension says to get the meat down to 35 to 40°F quickly and hold it at or below 40°F for no more than two to three days if you're processing it yourself. A compressor fridge that sets anywhere in that range does the job without a single bag of ice. If you plan to bring meat home frozen, you want a model that sets to 0°F or below.
Ambient limits still exist, they're just wider
Compressor fridges don't care much about the weather, but they do have limits. One maker's US spec sheet lists an operating ambient range of 61°F to 109°F for its smallest model. Another of its manuals says that above about 90°F outside, the lowest temperature can't be reached.
Notice the low end of that range, too. A 61°F floor means a frosty November truck bed sits outside that one model's stated range, so check the maker's ambient limits on both ends before you plan to leave it outside overnight. Hot weather costs you the bottom of the cooling range first.
One zone or two: the zones column
With a single-zone model you get one compartment and one setting. A dual-zone model has two compartments, each with its own setting. One maker's large dual-zone manual lists every combination: fridge and freezer, freezer and fridge, both fridge or both freezer.
At deer camp, dual zone is the one that ends arguments. Venison and ice cream in the freezer side, milk and eggs in the fridge side. Single zone is simpler, a bit lighter and enough if you only need one temperature. If you want the full fridge-freezer story, it's on the portable fridge freezer page.
12V compressor fridge input: 12V, 24V and the cable
Check the DC input column for 12V, 24V or both. Most list 12/24V, so they run off a car, a truck or a boat. The cable is the part people get wrong.
One maker's FAQ says flat out: don't use splitters, pigtails or extensions, because each one adds line loss. Line loss means the voltage at the fridge is lower than at the battery. That matters because the fridge judges the battery by the voltage that actually reaches it.
Exhibit A, from that maker's own troubleshooting: if the fridge shuts off early, check the voltage drop between the battery and the outlet and use a heavier cable if needed. Shorter and thicker beats long and thin. The same manual notes the vehicle's DC socket fuse is usually 15 A, so a dedicated outlet with its own fuse beats sharing a dash socket with a phone charger and a GPS.

Battery protection: set it for the battery you're using
This column is where compressor fridges earn their keep. Battery protection watches the incoming voltage and shuts the fridge off before the battery gets too low, then restarts once it's recharged. One maker's support page says the main job is to keep you from draining the starter battery and getting stranded.
The cut-off table in one large dual-zone manual reads like this on 12V:
- LOW: off at 10.1V, back on at 11.1V
- MED: off at 11.4V, back on at 12.2V
- HIGH: off at 11.8V, back on at 12.6V
Its advice: HIGH when the fridge hangs off the starter battery, LOW when it has a supply battery of its own. The US FAQ for another model says High or Medium on a starter battery and Low on an accessory or dual battery, and to drop one level if the fridge won't turn on.
AC power for the kitchen and the motel
The AC (wall) power column tells you if a wall cord is included. Plug in at home the night before and the fridge leaves the driveway already cold. One maker's manual describes a priority circuit: when both cords are connected, it switches to wall power on its own. Plug in at the motel and the truck battery gets the night off.
Capacity: buy smaller than your ice chest
Capacities here are in quarts; liter figures from makers get converted. One maker's buying guide says ice-free coolers are smaller than you think, because no space goes to ice. Its example: where you'd normally pack a 100-liter cooler for a multiday trip, 50 to 75 liters should do.
That's the ice math working in your favor for once. (Renee asked why I needed the big one. I said "the ice." She pointed out the new one doesn't use ice. I'm still working on a comeback.)
Exterior size, weight and tilt
Exterior size includes the handles, per the maker's own measurement. Measure the truck bed, the back seat or the slide before you buy. Check the weight column too. One maker's 25-liter model lists a net weight of 28 lb.
Tilt matters for trucks and boats. One maker's manual says its fridge can handle a constant lean of 30°, as on a boat. Another maker lists 40° tilt operation. The first manual also says to run the fridge in its normal upright position, or it can be damaged.
Which compressor fridge fits which trip
Compressor cooler for long weekends and deer camp
Three or four days at a cabin with the truck as the power plant is the textbook use. Run it on a separate battery if you can, or on HIGH protection off the starter battery, and plug in whenever there's an outlet.
Car fridge and road trips
For the vehicle-first version, with its own fit and wiring questions, see the car fridge page. A small single-zone compressor fridge between the seats is the road-trip setup.
RV and trailer use
For a fridge that lives in a camper, the RV fridge 12V page covers the camper side.
Off-grid with a battery or the sun
A compressor fridge is the efficient choice for battery and solar power. Battery-in-the-box models are on the battery-powered cooler page, and panel setups are on the solar cooler page.
Compressor vs thermoelectric cooler, side by side
People shop these two against each other because they look alike on a shelf. Underneath, they're different machines:
- Target: compressor holds a set temperature; thermoelectric holds a gap below the outside air
- Freezing: compressor, usually yes; thermoelectric, no
- Daily draw: compressor cycles on and off; thermoelectric runs nonstop while cooling
- Warming: thermoelectric often warms too; compressor fridges cool only
- Weight: one 40-quart thermoelectric cooler lists 18.75 lb; one 25-liter compressor model lists 28 lb
The deciding question is simple. Will the fridge run parked, on a battery, for more than a day? If yes, buy the compressor. If it only runs while you drive, in decent weather, the thermoelectric cooler will do and you'll carry less.
Setting up and running a compressor fridge
- Place it on a firm, level base with open space around the vents.
- Plug it in at home the night before and let it reach temperature empty.
- Load food that's already cold. Warm leftovers go in after they've cooled, per the manuals.
- Set the battery protection for the battery it's on.
- Keep it out of direct sun and open it only when you need to.
One manual has a warning that surprises ice-chest people: don't fill the inner container with ice or fluid. It's a fridge, not a tub. Frost is the other thing. Moisture builds frost on the inside walls, and that frost cuts cooling. Defrost once a layer forms. Empty it, switch it off, leave the lid open and wipe out the water. Never chip at the ice with a knife or anything pointed; the manual warns that hard or pointed tools can damage the fridge.
For cleaning, a damp cloth inside and out. Keep the cord and plug dry, and never handle the plug with wet hands or while standing on a wet surface.
When a compressor fridge is the wrong buy
If your trips are day drives in mild weather, a thermoelectric cooler is lighter and simpler, and the thermoelectric cooler page covers it. If you have no way to keep a battery charged, a good ice chest from the coolers page needs no wiring at all.
My one opinion on this page: when the fridge runs off the battery that starts your truck, set the protection to HIGH and leave it there. Look at the maker's own table. HIGH shuts the fridge off at 11.8V, LOW waits until 10.1V, and the manual reserves LOW for a separate supply battery. A warm drink is a nuisance. A truck that won't start at 5 a.m. in November is a ride from Walt.
Get the wiring right once and the fridge does the rest. It's the only member of camp that's never late.

Questions people ask
Thermoelectric vs compressor fridge: which should I buy?
Buy a compressor fridge for trips past two days, hot weather, freezing or running off a battery. Buy thermoelectric for short drives in mild weather. A compressor holds a set temperature and cycles off once it gets there; a thermoelectric cooler only reaches a set amount below the outside air and draws power the whole time. One maker steers trips over two days to compressor.
Is a compressor cooler more efficient than a thermoelectric cooler?
Yes, by a lot over a day. In one maker's own comparison at 12V, both of its examples pull close to 48 W. The compressor model runs only about 22% of the time and stays under 24 amp-hours a day; the thermoelectric one never rests and reaches about 94. The labels look alike. The daily totals don't.
Can a 12V compressor fridge run off my car battery overnight?
It can, with battery protection set right. These fridges watch the supply voltage and shut off before the battery runs too low. On one maker's 12V fridge, HIGH switches off at 11.8V and is the setting it recommends when the fridge runs on the vehicle's starter battery. A separate house battery is the safer plan for many nights.
How cold does a compressor fridge get?
Cold enough to freeze on most models. One maker's 25-liter model lists a range from 68°F down to -7.6°F. Ambient heat still matters at the edges: another maker's manual says that above 90°F outside, the lowest setting can't be reached. For food, the FDA wants a fridge at 40°F or below and a freezer at 0°F.
Do compressor fridges make noise?
A little. You'll hear a soft hum while the compressor runs, then quiet while it rests between cycles. One maker's manual lists 37 dB(A) for a large dual-zone model, and another maker lists under 42 dB. Give the vents room to breathe; the manuals warn that blocked vents let heat build up around the unit.
