Instant Tent
An instant tent is a tent with its poles already attached to the fabric. You unfold it, pull the legs out until they click, and stake it down. Makers claim about a minute once you've practiced. The trade is a heavier, longer bag than a tent with loose poles. It's the right pick when camp starts after dark on a Friday. It's the wrong pick when you carry it farther than the tailgate. Speed is nice. Stakes are still mandatory.

What’s in this listInstant tents with poles pre-attached to the body, quickest stated setup first. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.
What makes an instant tent different
An instant tent is about how the frame goes up, not what shape it ends up. CORE Equipment describes its version plainly: the poles are pre-attached to the tent body and join at central hub points, so the whole frame unfolds as one unit. Nothing gets threaded through sleeves. Nothing gets lost in the grass.
The setup, per CORE, is three moves and then stakes:
- Unfold. Lay the frame flat with the center hub pointing up.
- Extend. Lift the legs upward.
- Lock. Pull each leg out until the spring-loaded button clicks.
Then you stake the corners. That last step is the one people skip when they read "60 seconds" on a box.
An instant tent can be a tall cabin shape or a round dome. CORE treats shape and pole system as two separate choices, which is the right way to think about it. It also isn't the same as a pop-up tent, which springs open by itself; those are on the pop-up tent page. General tent basics are on the camping tent page.
The table on this page lists instant tents whose poles come pre-attached to the body, quickest stated setup first. Columns run from the claimed setup time to the person rating, floor, peak height, shape, fly, rooms, doors, fabric, frame and weight. A dash means neither the maker nor the listing states it; values read from the listing are marked.

Instant tent vs regular tent
Here's the short version, using CORE's own comparison of its instant and traditional tents.
- Setup time: under 2 minutes for the hub design; a quarter to half an hour for loose poles
- Experience needed: none for instant, some practice for poles
- Takedown: collapse and fold the instant frame; take apart and pack separate poles
- Pack size and weight: CORE says traditional tents pack down a bit smaller and are the lighter option
- Best fit: instant for car camping; separate poles for backpacking and longer carries
So the instant design buys you time at the campsite and pays for it in the bag. If the tent rides from the truck bed to a pad twenty steps away, that's a good trade. If it rides on your back, it isn't.
My one opinion on this page: buy an instant tent for the campsite you drive to, not the one you walk to. The reason is CORE's own comparison. It calls traditional pole tents the lighter option that packs down smaller, and says they're great for backpacking or longer carries. Instant earns its weight at the tailgate. Past that, every step is a step with the heavier bag. And fast doesn't mean finished: CORE's 35 mph wind figure for its instant cabins holds only once every stake and guy line is in.
What to look at in an instant tent
Claimed setup time is a best case
The table's setup time is the maker's claim. CORE's own figures show the gap: about 60 seconds with a little practice, and roughly two to five minutes for a first-timer. It suggests a backyard practice run first. I'd add one more: do the practice run with gloves on if your trips run cold. A push-button lock is a different animal with numb fingers.
Hubs and leg locks are the parts that matter
On an instant frame, the hubs and the leg locks do all the work. The legs telescope and lock with a spring-loaded button. Per CORE's care guide, raise the legs individually rather than snapping the frame open, which spares the joints. Treat those hubs like the hinge on a good tool box. Don't force them, don't stand on them, and keep grit out of the button.
Instant cabin tent or instant dome
The style column tells you the shape. An instant cabin tent has straight walls, and CORE says cabin tents let most adults stand upright comfortably and give more usable floor space. An instant dome is lower and rounder, and CORE describes domes as using less material and fewer poles. For a family, the cabin is usually the reason people buy instant in the first place: a tall room up in a couple of minutes. For one or two people, a dome does the job with a smaller bag.
Size: from a 6 person instant tent to a 10 person instant tent
Instant tents come in the same person ratings as any other, and the rating means the same thing. In CORE's terms, the rating is a pad count across the floor, and the comfortable size is roughly twice your group. CORE describes its 6-person instant tent as a fit for couples or small families, compact and easy to transport, and its 12-person as having standing height and room for several sleeping bags or air beds.
A 6 person instant tent goes up fast with one adult. A 10 person instant tent is a big frame to unfold, and the bag is long. If you're between sizes, the 6 person tent and 10 person tent pages cover what changes at each one.
Rainfly: built in or separate
The rainfly column shows whether the maker or the listing lists a full fly, a partial one or none. CORE says its full-rainfly models add a layer over the roof and walls and have tub-style floors. Its fabric uses a PU coating, factory-taped and heat-sealed seams, and a 1200 mm hydrostatic head rating. Read the waterproof rating in the table as the fabric's number, then check whether the fly covers the doors. A fly that stops at the roof leaves the walls to handle blowing rain alone.
Poles, fabric and weight
The poles column shows the frame material the maker or the listing lists. CORE says steel poles and hub joints give its instant frames strong structural support. Expect instant tents on the heavier side of the weight column, for the reason in the comparison above. If you'll lift the bag in and out of the truck alone, look at that number before the setup time.
Rooms, doors and built-in extras
Instant cabin tents often come with the same extras as any big family tent, and the table's rooms and doors columns show what the maker or the listing lists. CORE describes its 9-person instant model as having a room divider that makes two spaces, plus built-in LED lighting behind a diffusion panel. A divider is worth having in a family tent; a light built into the frame is one less thing to find in the dark, as long as you remember what powers it.
Doors matter more than people expect on an instant cabin. With straight walls and a wide floor, a single door means everyone files out one end. Two doors make the morning less of a parade. For air, big mesh windows are what CORE points to, so weigh window size along with the door count.
Four seasons only on the maker's word
Treat a blank in the seasons column as unknown, and a 4-season label as the maker's own claim for that one model.
Who an instant tent suits
An instant tent earns its place when setup time is the problem you're solving:
- Families arriving after a long drive, with kids who need a place to be
- Hunters pulling into a drive-in camp after dark on opening eve
- Campers who set up alone; CORE says one person can unfold, extend and lock its frame, it just takes longer
- Weekenders who pitch and strike the tent every trip
Danny's take, after watching one go up beside our truck: "That's the first tent I've seen finished before the cooler was unloaded." He meant it as praise. He also asked why we still had a tent with loose poles. I told him because it fits behind the seat.
Setting up and folding it back
Pick the spot before you open the bag. The National Park Service says to find a large, flat place, clear it of sticks, rocks and pinecones, stay out of low spots that flood in rain, and look up for dead branches. Lay a groundcloth or footprint first, with any extra folded under.
Then unfold, extend, lock and stake. Stake the corners before you step back to admire it, because a light frame on a breezy evening wants to leave.
Folding it back is the part the box doesn't brag about. CORE's steps: release the lock on each leg, press the frame down toward the center hub, roll the fabric into a pod around the folded poles, and slide it into the carry bag. Do it slowly the first time. The bag was sized for a perfect fold, and nobody's first fold is perfect.
Caring for the frame and the fabric
CORE's care guide covers both halves of an instant tent.
- Frame: extend and lock legs one at a time, never snap the frame open
- Fabric: clean with a soft sponge and fragrance-free, non-detergent soap; no washing machine
- Drying: never store it wet; if you packed in rain, re-pitch it in the yard the same day
- Heat: no clothes dryer, because heat breaks down waterproof coatings
- Seams: inspect taped seams each season; if tape lifts, remove that section, seal from the outside and allow 24 hours before folding
- Storage: the carry bag is for transport; for months in the closet, CORE suggests a breathable sack somewhere cool and dry
The nice thing about an instant tent at home is that drying it takes a minute to set up. The less nice thing is that the yard is now a campsite until it's dry.
No heaters or fuel lanterns inside
The CPSC's camping guidance covers tents, campers and vehicles alike: no portable heater or lantern running while anyone sleeps inside. Light the inside with battery lights and dress for the night instead.
Who should skip an instant tent
Skip the instant design if:
- You carry your tent more than a short walk; separate poles pack smaller and lighter
- You camp in open, windy places and won't take time to guy it out fully
- You want a winter shelter and the maker makes no 4-season claim
- You pack the car to the roof already; the instant bag is longer than a tent with loose poles
For a straight-walled tent with loose poles, see the cabin tent page.
An instant tent saves you twenty minutes at the campsite. Spend five of them on the stakes. That's still a good deal.

Questions people ask
Instant tent vs regular tent: which is better?
It depends on the trip. CORE says instant tents set up in two minutes or less with pre-attached poles, while regular tents with separate poles take 15 to 30 minutes but pack a bit smaller and lighter. Instant suits car camping and late arrivals; separate poles suit long carries and backpacking.
How long does an instant tent really take to set up?
Maker claims are best cases. CORE says about 60 seconds with a little practice, and two to five minutes for a first-timer, before staking. Add time for stakes and guy lines, which CORE ties directly to its wind rating. Do a practice run at home first.
Can one person set up an instant tent?
Usually, yes. CORE says one person can unfold, extend and lock its instant frames alone, though it may take longer than with two. On big cabin sizes, a second person helps hold the frame steady in wind while the first legs lock.
Is an instant tent the same as a pop-up tent?
No. An instant tent has pre-attached telescoping poles joined at hubs; you extend each leg until it locks. A pop-up tent springs open on its own frame. The table on this page sorts them apart by setup type, and pop-up designs have their own page.
Are instant tents waterproof?
Only as far as the maker states for that model. CORE says its full-rainfly instant models use PU-coated fabric, factory-taped and heat-sealed seams and a 1200 mm hydrostatic head rating, with tub-style floors. Check the table's rainfly and waterproof rating columns, and whether the fly covers the doors.
