Everyday Carry Knife
An everyday carry knife is a folding knife built to ride in your pocket every single day, so it lives or dies on four things: a pocket clip, a modest blade, one-hand opening and a lock. This page lists folders with a clip and a blade of 3.5 inches or less, as the maker or the Amazon listing states them. Here's the thing about an EDC knife. The best one is the one you actually have on you, not the nice one in the truck.

What’s in this listFolding knives with a pocket clip and a blade of 3.5 inches or less, as stated by the maker or the Amazon listing. Check your state's rules on carry. Weights are the maker's own figures. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.
What makes an everyday carry knife different
Most pocket knives are built for a job. An everyday carry knife is built for a habit. It goes in your pocket every morning, rides there through the feed store, the truck and the tree stand, and comes out a dozen times a day for small cuts.
Benchmade's category guide puts it in plain words: EDC knives are made to disappear in your pocket and be ready when you need them. It lists the usual jobs as opening boxes and handling quick fixes.
That changes what matters. A traditional three-blade knife in the bottom of a pocket is still a fine knife. An EDC knife has to clip in place, open with one hand and lock, because the other hand is usually holding the thing you're cutting.
The shared basics of folding knives (lock types, steels, blade shapes and traditional patterns) are on the main pocket knife page. This page sticks to what changes when you carry one every day.
The table on this page lists folding knives with a pocket clip and a blade of 3.5 inches or less, as the maker or the listing states them. It shows blade length, closed length, weight, lock, opening method, steel and handle, the maker's numbers first and the listing's where the maker is silent (marked as listing values; weight is the maker's alone). A dash means neither states it.
What to look at in an EDC knife
Here's what I'd check, in order, before a knife earns a permanent spot in the pocket.
Pocket clip: it decides how the knife rides
A clip holds the knife upright at the top of the pocket instead of loose at the bottom with the keys and the change. Kershaw's clip guide lists the common setups:
- Single position: the clip mounts in one spot only
- Reversible: tip-up or tip-down for right-handers, or tip-up in either pocket
- 3-position: tip-up or tip-down on the right, tip-up on the left
- 4-position: tip-up or tip-down in either pocket
- Deep carry: mounted at the butt end so more of the knife sits below the pocket edge
If you're left-handed, the clip positions matter more than almost anything else in the table. A right-pocket-only clip on a left-handed carrier is a knife that spends its life in a drawer.
Tip-up or tip-down is mostly habit. Pick one, set the clip, and leave it. Your hand learns where the knife is in about a week.
Blade length of 3.5 inches or less covers the daily jobs
This page draws the line at 3.5 inches of blade, as the maker or the listing states it. That's enough for cardboard, twine, zip ties, an apple and most camp chores. It also keeps the handle short enough to sit in a front pocket without poking you every time you climb into the truck.
Longer is not better here. A shorter blade is easier to control on small cuts, and small cuts are most of what an EDC knife does.
Closed length and weight decide whether you'll keep carrying it
Two numbers decide if a knife is still in your pocket in March:
- Closed length: how long the knife is folded, which is what your pocket actually feels
- Weight: in ounces, which you feel by evening
Benchmade's EDC advice points to compact to mid-size profiles and lightweight handle materials to cut fatigue over a full day. When closed length is blank in the table, open length minus blade length is a fair stand-in.
If ounces are the main thing you care about, the lightweight pocket knife page sorts folders by weight. Rule of thumb: if you notice the knife sitting down, it's too heavy to carry daily.
One-hand opening is the point of an EDC knife
On an everyday carry knife, the other hand is usually busy holding a box, a rope or a ladder. That's why the opening column matters. Boker's opening guide covers the usual options:
- Thumb stud: a small stud on the blade; some knives put one on each side for lefties
- Thumb hole: an opening in the blade; works the same left or right
- Flipper: a small tab that sticks out the back of the handle when closed
- Nail nick: a notch for your thumbnail, the traditional two-hand method
Smaller EDC blades suit flippers, because Boker says light blades flip more easily than heavy ones. Spring-assisted openers finish the swing for you once you start it, and they have their own spring assisted knife page.
Practice opening it a few dozen times at the kitchen table before you rely on it. Slowly. A knife you fumble with is a knife you'll drop.
A lock you can close one-handed
For daily carry, the lock should hold the blade open and let you close it without a second hand. From Benchmade's mechanism guide:
- Liner lock: easy to release for one-handed closing; the most common modern choice
- Frame lock: stronger than a liner lock, but closing puts your hand in the blade path
- Crossbar locks: smooth one-handed use and ambidextrous
- Lockback: simple and reliable, traditional feel
Every one of these is fine for boxes and cord. The difference is how your hand moves when you close it. Pick the one you can close with your fingers clear of the edge, every time, without looking.
Blade shape: drop point for most pockets
Benchmade's blade guide calls the drop point one of the most popular all-purpose shapes and lists it for everyday carry. The belly slices; the tip still pierces tape.
A sheepsfoot, with its straight edge and blunt nose, makes sense if most of your cutting is near something you don't want to poke, like a hand, a sack of seed or a truck seat. Tanto and spear points lean toward tactical use and are covered on the tactical knife page.
Plain or serrated edge for the jobs you actually do
The table's edge column tells you plain, serrated or partly serrated. Spyderco describes its plain edge as easy to sharpen and suited to precise cuts, and its serrated edge as cutting fibrous material faster.
So match it to your day. Lots of rope, strapping and feed-bag twine: some serrations help. Food, whittling and fine work: plain. Partly serrated gives you some of each, with less of either. If you sharpen your own knives, a plain edge is far less fuss.
Steel: pick for the upkeep you'll actually do
A daily knife gets handled with sweaty hands, wet gloves and lunch. The table shows a steel type for each knife: stainless, carbon, tool steel, powder steel or Damascus.
W.R. Case's steel notes frame it as edge versus upkeep: carbon takes a keen edge back quickly on a stone, while stainless shrugs off sweat and rain with little attention. For a knife that rides in a pocket all year, stainless is the low-fuss choice. Carbon is fine if wiping the blade is already part of your evening.
Handle material decides grip and how cold it feels
Benchmade's materials guide is worth reading before you choose:
- G10: doesn't absorb water, textures well for grip
- Aluminum: light and metal-solid, though Benchmade says it can feel cold
- Titanium: low weight for its strength, needs no coating against corrosion
- Glass-filled nylon: keeps weight remarkably low and resists moisture
For Pennsylvania in November, I'd take a textured synthetic. Aluminum on a 20-degree morning feels like grabbing the truck door handle.
Setting up an everyday carry knife
A good EDC knife needs about five minutes of setup.
- Move the clip to the pocket and tip position you'll actually use, if the knife allows it.
- Check the clip screws are snug. Benchmade says not to overtighten them.
- Clip the knife in with the clip facing out and the blade side against the pocket seam, the way Kershaw describes.
- Practice opening, locking and closing until you can do it without looking at the edge.
Kershaw says a clipped knife is less likely to open by accident, even if something else in your pocket hits the flipper. It also says not to clip the knife to your belt or the outside of the pocket, and not to carry it loose.
Then leave it in that pocket for good. I've carried my knife in the same front-right pocket since back in '94, and my hand goes there without asking. It goes there in church, too. Nothing's in it on Sundays, and my hand checks anyway. That's the habit you want: the knife is always where your hand already is, so you never stand there patting yourself down like a man who lost his truck keys.

Care: lint is the everyday carry problem
A knife that lives in a pocket collects pocket. Benchmade lists lint, dirt, food residue and moisture building up on the blade and in the pivot, and says that buildup can affect how the knife works and lead to corrosion.
- Weekly: wipe the blade, check that the lock engages fully
- Deeper clean: Benchmade suggests one every few weeks, more often with heavy use
- Lube: a small amount on pivot and lock once it's dry, then wipe the excess so it doesn't grab more lint
- Lint in the handle: dig it out with a toothpick, AKTI's choice of tool
Touch up the edge before it's dull. A daily knife gets dull daily, and a dull one makes you push harder, which is how slips happen. Five minutes with a stone on Sunday night covers it.
Who should skip an EDC knife
- Field dressing deer: use a fixed blade from the hunting knife page; no pivot to pack with gunk
- Pliers and screwdrivers wanted too: an EDC multi-tool carries a blade plus tools
- No pocket clip habit: if you'll never use the clip, a traditional pocket knife rides fine loose in a pocket
Carry it safely
Close the blade with your fingers on the handle, clear of the edge. Per AKTI, a quality folder is built to want to close, and the spring can take over partway through the swing.
- Aim the edge away from you and keep people out of your cutting space.
- Fold it and clip it before you walk anywhere.
- Use it only to cut, not to pry or hammer; AKTI warns a twisted blade can slip or snap.
Knife carry rules, including blade length limits, vary by state and by place. Check your state's rules before you carry.
Plain and simple: clip it where your hand expects it, open it with one hand, close it with your fingers clear. Then carry it so much you forget it's there.

Questions people ask
What is an EDC knife?
EDC stands for everyday carry. An EDC knife is a folding knife you carry daily for routine jobs like opening boxes, cutting cord and small fixes. Benchmade describes its EDC category as compact to mid-size knives with lightweight handles, a smooth opening action and a dependable lock. On this page it also means a pocket clip and a blade of 3.5 inches or less.
What blade length is best for an everyday carry knife?
For this page the line is 3.5 inches or less, as the maker or the listing states it. That's long enough for boxes, rope and food, and short enough to ride in a front pocket. Shorter blades are easier to control on small cuts. Knife carry rules, including blade length limits, vary by state and city, so check your state's rules.
Should I carry my knife tip-up or tip-down?
It depends on the knife's clip and your habit. Kershaw's clip guide lists reversible, 3-position and 4-position clips that allow tip-up or tip-down carry in one or both pockets. Whichever you pick, Kershaw says to keep the clip facing out and the blade side against the pocket seam, and to use the clip rather than carrying the knife loose.
Is a pocket knife EDC the same as a tactical knife?
They overlap, but the emphasis differs. Benchmade frames EDC knives around comfortable all-day carry and routine tasks, and tactical knives around speed and reliability with gloves or reduced dexterity, with reinforced tips and steel liners. Many folders fit both. If glove use and fast opening are your priority, read the tactical knife page.
